Ellen Barlow – Movement Training

Certified GYROTONIC® and specialized equipment instructor, Ellen is a movement education specialist with over 25 years experience teaching and designing programs in fitness, rehabilitation, dance, yoga and other mind-body practices. She is a Registered Movement Therapist with the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association and a certified practitioner and teacher of Body-Mind Centering®.

While Ellen approaches movement training from multiple perspectives, she engages her GYROTONIC® exercise clients in anatomical awareness and perceptual-motor learning so they may embody their experiences of improved alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.

GYROTONIC® exercises employ movements found in swimming, yoga, gymnastics, and tai chi, using machines developed by Juliu Horvath. The system enables one to achieve simultaneous strength and flexibility. It is used world-wide by dancers, athletes, and in rehabilitation facilities, as well as for general conditioning for all walks of life.

Unlike most conventional exercise machines where linear or isolated movements are performed, the GYROTONIC® motions emphasize multiple joint articulations without compression in circular motions. Special attention is paid to increased mobility and stability of the spine, resulting in a superior and well-proportioned body that is less prone to injury.

We jumped right into this call with Ellen Barlow and began with the same question that’s been posed to Judith Dack and Derrick Price, “What is your definition of fitness?” She laid some groundwork and said that fitness when measured is very personal but has some universal elements.

Ellen explained that when it comes to fitness there’s a question that we should all ask:

How healthy and well are you in relation to your personal values?

Feeling comfortable and confident as your body moves as well as feeling real vitality can be universal but also shift from person to person. In Ellen’s case, vitality creates a feeling of energy and is powerful enough to put a grin on her face and a bounce in her step. It also enables her to have a more sound relationship with her environment and the people in her life.

How does vitality look in your own life? What do you consider vitality to be?

If you’re unsure of can’t put an answer together, play with the notions of “calm with a smile” and “comfortable and confident as your body moves.”

For some more help developing your own sense of vitality, tune into this Saturday’s Body Dialoging show.

Ellen also shared that when it comes to fitness, there’s a lot that can be learned from the subconscious. By paying attention to what comes through, you can learn things about your body tat you may never have known. As you’re exercising, opening up to what your body is doing is the most basic way to awaken sensation and realize the impact that exercise can have.

When you bring your awareness with you and integrate it into everything you do, you can avoid injury, exercise more effectively, and maintain a beneficial connection between the mind and body. This attentiveness also enables you to discover your body. Getting to know your genetic predispositions and just learning how your body is built also helps you maximize the benefit of every exercise you jump into.

Ellen then explained that cross training makes it easier to break through plateaus and achieve greater results without injuring your body. By mixing it all up and looking for new ways to exercise, rethinking the “how,” and just pursuing some different ways of moving, you stimulate your brain and help your body reach into more beneficial areas.

She followed up that explanation by sharing that “support precedes movement” and offering an exercise that increases awareness (If you haven’t listened already, scroll up a bit and dive into the replay to act along with us). The exercises she lead us through focused on a principle that Ellen explained as “stability through contrast” and “seeking variety by exploring your spiral.”

One of the sayings in Body Mind Centering is “Movement Changes the Mind” and as you practice these really simple movements, you will open up and explore a brand new world of personal fitness. Jennifer shared that she’s even started to integrate these exercises into her regular workout regimen with her established physical trainer.

After these eye-opening exercises, the conversation turned to developmental patterns and physical activity as well as the importance of play in a child’s mental development. Allowing movement to unfold is really important when it comes to creating those necessary brain pathways. We also learned about GYROTONIC® exercise and the power of three-dimensional movements. If you head to www.gyrotonic.com, you’ll be able to see all the equipment and learn more about the GYROTONIC process. Then, head to http://www.bmcassociation.org and www.bodymindcentering.com for a list of practitioners and more information about Body Mind Centering.

We finished the call with some wonderful movement released tension by exploring the spirals. Listen in, move in fun new ways, and discover how body and environmental awareness can shift your whole perspective.
